Twinning with Palestine

The Britain - Palestine Twinning Network - "promoting twinning and friendship links"

About us

We are a group of activists who feel deeply for the plight of the Palestinian people and who wish to encourage twinning or friendship links with Palestinian communities, be they refugee camps, rural villages, towns or universities.

As yet we have no groups with links to Palestinian refugee camps in other Arab countries or Israel itself. Whilst we do not rule such links out, our primary focus is on the West Bank and Gaza.

We are not a group with a membership or resources, but a loose network seeking to share our experiences and provide resources and assistance to groups and campaigns who wish to or have built friendship links with Palestinian communities.

If you are a group developing friendship or twinning links you can join this network for £30 per year. We do not have individual membership, as we see ourselves as a network of groups. However, if you support our work we welcome donations from supporters, who will be kept fully informed of events and activities.

We aim to ensure wide coverage of these links, and avoid one community in Palestine linking with many places in the U.K.

Why Link?

The Palestinians are under occupation. They feel cut off and isolated, today literally behind a wall. Many are unaware of the support of people all over the world. Our support means a lot to them. Visiting and creating friendship with Palestinians allows us to explain their situation more clearly.

It is difficult to grasp just how awful the situation is for the Palestinians. Visiting and getting to know them individually is very important. Many of our supporters report back that nothing compares to seeing what it is like, the terrible huge wall, the problems and restrictions in movement, incursions into the camp while they were there, seeing people injured, the collective punishment being very visible. None the less they say that people there are very welcoming and it is hard to come back and hear the situation being so misrepresented here.

We do belong to any one political or religious grouping. We have student union groups, peace and justice groups, charities, Churches Together, independent twinning groups, Scottish groups and others, and we are working together to make this a nationwide movement, to support each other and spread the work.

Unlike solidarity work, which is political, twinning has a sustained focus and concentrates on building personal relationships with the Palestinians. Our conferences and events concentrate not on political speeches and platforms, but workshops and sharing experiences and successes.

This link provides in graphic detail what daily life under occupation is like for Palestinians (www.alternativenews.org) - Settler Violence report 15 December 2005 - 15 January 2006.

Unnecessarily divided - the wall not only cuts Palestinian villagers off from their lands, but literally cuts communities in two. This photo was taken in November 2005, there is now a wall there dividing this community.
